As for how the game played... dude, it was great. They had a mouse and keyboard and controller set up .. you know I went for the controller and it just was Torchlight from the start. The aesthetic is an updated version of what they had nailed in the past games.. it sounded good.. aside from some development hiccups and T poses.. animations still have that fluid, exaggerated, cartoon feel.
They had 2 classes on display a caster who specialized in dark and light magic and a robot.. both quirky. It's through and through, Torchlight. If I can speculate a bit here.. I think the decision years ago to almost be the opposite of what Diablo was.. right, what did I say earlier... bright colours and whimsy. Torchlight is one of those games that allowed it's art and artists to influence and creep into the design of the game.. it allows the game to be a bit goofy - to not take itself too seriously - and let fun be the guiding principal.. https://stefanukmusic.com/sega-dreamcast-gaming-historian/ I mean.. look at the trailer and look at this ability that looks like it comes from an engineer.. he places a mounted gun on like a minecart.. and he is able to keep laying down tracks for the cart to direct it towards new enemies.. I mean, come on. Even if it doesn't make sense that you can bring your trusty alpacca into combat with you or seeing enemies animations that knock themselves down when they fire their blow dart.. cannon, it just leaves you with a smirk after the last 5 aRPGs you played have that more serious tone and instead have monsters that would literally vomit out other monsters in a zone modelled after literal hell. Torchlight: Frontiers is like.. eyebleach for the genre.. and was an unexpected highlight of the event for me. And already planned for PS4 and Xbox on top of PC.. I'm stoked. If they somehow could weasel a Switch release.. I'd die. I think monetization will be really interesting to watch unfold.. because in regards to cosmetics or pets or dyes or base and housing stuff.. these cartoony, heavily stylized games are prime for it - FashionLight.. is gonna happen. In Path of Exile there already exists a formula that has proven successful.. although not uniformly loved - PoE has something Torchlight won't have.. which is that weird grass roots, started from the bottom now we're here, I pay to support them, I'm part of this type thing. So where Torchlight: Frontiers goes with this.. or has to go.. or chooses to go.. could be really interesting. I think shared spaces is a logical next step for this type of game and I remember similar sounding things in Marvel Heroes that worked well - before that was nuked.. and there is definitely still room in the genre to secure a player base.. and real talk I just am happy to see color. I just want and need more information.. and I hope as it's released that the benefits from removing the offline mode and mod that many gamers loved the franchise for.. are worth it. Until next time, this is Fevir. Peace.
